What’s Your Love Song to Yourself?
Do you remember those heady days when you first fell in love with someone? When you wanted to be with them all the time, and when you couldn’t, you found ways to stay connected—maybe by sharing a song that reminded you of them?
If you’re Gen X like me, that probably meant making a mix tape—a carefully chosen collection of songs, each one carrying a story, an emotion, a memory. A way of saying, this is how much you mean to me.
Lately, I’ve been wondering—if I made a mix tape for myself, what would be on it?
Not just songs I love, but songs that speak to me, that remind me to love and care for myself. The songs I need to hear.
Loving Ourselves the Way We Love Others
What does this have to do with safeguarding, helping professions, and the way we care for others?
Everything.
Because if you work in a role where you protect, support, or nurture others, chances are you’re brilliant at showing love and care—except, perhaps, when it comes to yourself.
We pour ourselves into looking after other people, making sure they’re safe, seen, and valued. But do we set the same boundaries for ourselves? Do we take the time to nourish and nurture our own well-being?
Your Love Song to You
So, let me ask you: If you had to choose a love song just for yourself, what would it be?
What do you need to hear right now?
Does the idea of dedicating a love song to yourself feel uncomfortable? If so—what is stopping you?
For me, one of my songs would be Loving You by Minnie Riperton—gentle, soulful, full of care.
